The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples has called for a justice reinvestment scheme to be introduced in every state. Justice reinvestment aims to prevent criminal behaviour before it begins, through community-driven preventive and diversionary initiatives – also saving money on imprisonment. The scheme also offers support to former prisoners who face adversity once released. A trial scheme in the ACT has been extended due to positive results. As the Victorian election rolls closer, it is ample time for parties to consider a justice reinvestment scheme or similar justice strategy.
